Dazzling in gold on the reverse, the crucified Christ and the Salvator Mundi were engraved and then chiseled on a metal plate, before being attached to a wooden core. Engraving is a decorative process in which the goldsmith draws lines on metal, often using a specific chisel to more or less cut into the material, depending on the tool used (drypoint or graver). Chasing is an ornamentation process where the goldsmith draws lines on metal with a chisel placed perpendicular to the plate, without removing the material but printing it with a hammer.
