Engraved inscriptions

Inscriptions frame the figures and run along the ends of the cross. If the first identify the characters by consecrated expressions, the second are taken from a poem by Petrus Riga (Floridus Aspectus), whose verses form a commentary on the animal allegories associated with the evangelists. To engrave these verses on the cross, the goldsmith may have had before his eyes a copy of the poem, belonging to the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Clairmarais and now kept in the library of Saint-Omer.
