Christ crucified between the Virgin and Saint John, Adam rising at the foot of the cross

The middle register is dedicated to the Crucifixion. The resigned Christ is placed between the afflicted Virgin and Saint John. The presence of the resurrected Adam at the foot of the cross recalls two legends: the first identifies the place of the Crucifixion, Golgotha (place or mount of the skull), with the one where he would have been buried. The second tells us that at the death of the first man, the Archangel Michael would have given his son Seth seeds from the Tree of Life in Paradise, to place them in his father's mouth. From these seeds grew a tree which was later made into the wood of the cross.
