The details that define the facial features of the four figures, their hair, the draped garments and hands, the fur and plumage of the fantastic creatures, the veins of the scrollwork, and the punched decoration of the semicircular arches were created through chasing. This technique allows for the creation of decorative motifs without removing material, by means of small, successive strokes that impress the design into the metal using a chasing tool (a small chisel or punch).
