Use

In Christian liturgy, the censer is a perfume-burning vessel suspended from three chains that allow it to be swung during worship. The openwork of this object allowed the smoke emanating from the burning incense inside to escape. These incense vapors symbolize the ascent of prayers to heaven. The glowing embers and smoke metaphorically re-enacted the episode of the Three Hebrews in the fiery furnace.
