If the foot has lost its cross, all its decoration, functioning on the symbolism of the four, evokes the disappeared object, instrument of the martyrdom of Christ and promise of Salvation (Redemption) by this sacrifice: evangelists writing and their symbols placed diagonally to form a cross, enamelled plates of the dome and the pillar, figures of the capital personifying air, earth, water, fire. The words engraved on the books of Mark, Luke and Matthew speak of the last moments of Jesus, while the enamels illustrate scenes from the Old Testament (Old Testaments), which, for theologians, are so many prefigurations of the death of Christ.
