The twelve wonderful statuettes in the round, that is to say in three dimensions (the four evangelists and their symbols, the four allegories of the capital), are made using the technique of lost wax casting. This molding process makes it possible to obtain a metal sculpture from a clay model covered with wax. This is wrapped in a mold made of refractory material (say, ceramic with refractory properties?) called a “hotpot mold”. The wax melts by heating, then is replaced by the molten metal within the mold, which is then broken. This technique makes it possible to obtain very complex parts with great precision in the details, which are further reworked after demoulding.
