Without being a copy, the foot of the cross, the work of a Mosan workshop (Liège?) who came to work in Saint-Bertin, recalls, in its form and function, the cross of Saint-Denis commissioned by Abbé Suger, around 1140, to goldsmiths from the same region. On the other hand, the style of the enamels and the figures in the round, of exceptional quality, places its execution around 1170-80. The free and natural attitudes of the full-length or bust figures, the drapes, the naturalism of the foliage, as well as the supple design of the enamels, in soft colors and marbled hues, testify to a new interest in ancient art, announcing the "artistic revolution" of the 1200s.
