Function and decor of the object

The pyxis is a small box that allows the consecrated hosts to be kept. In the Middle Ages, it can be made of ivory or metal, precious or not, and adopts various forms, in particular a circular receptacle with a conical lid. The pyxis of Saint-Omer belongs to a small group of pedunculated objects (on a stand) from the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century, whose particularity is to present openwork parts allowing the Blessed Sacrament to be seen.
